"Rave On Buddy Holly" Tribute Record to Include, Well, Everyone

LA Times reported today that a Buddy Holly tribute with, well, everyone in music today is coming out in June.

Rave On Buddy Holly, out 6/28, will include 19-tracks from folks like Modest Mouse, Cee Lo Green, and The Black Keys.

“As the tracks from various contributors were gathered for the album, we seemed to be gathering pieces of a complex and original puzzle … that traces back to the roots of rock and roll and shapes so much of the music that followed," says the press release. Rave On will, apparently, "steer clear of the reverent re-creations typically found on similar projects." Maybe that's why the peppy "Rave On" will be done by the droll-voice of Julian Casablancas?

Rave On Buddy Holly Tracklist:

1. "Dearest," The Black Keys
2. "Every Day," Fiona Apple & Jon Brion
3. "It’s So Easy," Paul McCartney
4. "Not Fade Away," Florence + The Machine

Happy 63rd Birthday David Bowie!

Set your phasers on funky, David Bowie turns 63 today. Let's hope we all look as good as he does when we're that age.

A tribute album of Bowie songs is set for release in May. Tribute records can often be hit or miss but this one could be worth the money, as all of its proceeds go to charity (War Child International, a network of independent organizations that help children affected by war). Artists on the record are a wonderfully random smattering, from the awesomely ear-splitting A Place to Bury Strangers doing "Suffragette City" (that alone will be worth the cost), to the First Lady of France, Carla Bruni, covering "Absolute Beginners."

'Space Oddity' (Exitmusic)
'John, I'm Only Dancing' (Vivian Girls)
'Sound + Vision' (Megapuss)
'Absolute Beginners' (Carla Bruni)
'World Falls Down' (Lights)
''Heroes'' (VOICEsVOICEs)
'Boys Keep Swinging' (Duran Duran)
'TBA' (MGMT)
'Always Crashing In The Same Car' (Charlift)
'African Night Flight' (Aska w/ Moon & Moon)
'Suffragette City' (A Place to Bury Strangers)
'Theme From Cat People' (The Polyamorous Affair)
'Life on Mars' (Keren Ann)
'Red Money' (Swahili Blonde feat. John Frusciante)
'Art Decade' (Marco Benevento)
'Be My Wife' (Corridor)
'The Superman' (Aquaserge)
'Ashes To Ashes' (Warpaint)
'Quicksand' (Rainbow Arabia)
'Afraid of Americans' (We Are The World)
'Within You' (Laco$te)
'Ziggy Stardust' (Ariana Delawari)
'Modern Love' (Pizza!)
'Secret Life Of Arabia' (St Clair Board)
'Starman' (Caroline Weeks)
'The Man Who Sold The World' (Amanda Jo Williams)

SPIN Magazine Releasing a Tribute Album for Prince's "Purple Rain" Movie

Seems SPIN is having bands cover tracks from "Purple Rain" for the 25th anniversary of the film's release, and making it free for subscribers this month. Bands involved are The Twilight Singers, Fol Chen, Of Montreal, and those maniacal Texas punks, The Riverboat Gamblers. Caught them at SXSW this year, and it was something rather extraordinary, if only for the energy of the lead singer alone. If you need one reason to get a SPIN subscription, The Riverboat Gamblers covering His Purple Highness should be all you need.

For this summer's 25th anniversary of Prince's classic movie and album Purple Rain, SPIN is excited to announce the release of Purplish Rain, a tribute album made up of nine tracks commissioned by the editors of SPIN.

The entire album will be available as a free download for SPIN magazine readers and subscribers via SPIN.com starting June 23.

Purplish Rain was produced to accompany the July cover story, an oral history of Purple Rain, for which contributing writer Brian Raftery spoke to most of the key people involved in the creation of the movie and album.

Full tracklist for Purplish Rain:

1. "Let's Go Crazy" RIVERBOAT GAMBLERS
2. "Take Me With U" SHARON JONES & THE DAP-KINGS

4. "Computer Blue" OF MONTREAL
5. "Darling Nikki" CHAIRLIFT
6. "When Doves Cry" THE TWILIGHT SINGERS
