Leave Your Souls at the Door: Black Keys and Vampire Weekend in "Sell-Out Off" on Colbert Report

According to Stephen Colbert, the Grammy's "Best Alternative Band of the Year" category is decided by who got the most songs in the most commercials. So the The Black Keys and Vampire Weekend square off, head to head. Me, I've long despised VW and have a mad crush on the Keys' Dan Auerbach, so my choice is obvious...

Stephen Malkmus Interviewed on The Colbert Report, Pavement Plays

I was getting ready to go to NYC to see Pavement when this aired, so sorry for the delay. First thing I thought was wow, how uncomfortable does lead singer Stephen Malkmus look here? But "Gold Soundz" was pretty solid...maybe Malkmus just doesn't care for interviews?

Seen Your Video: The Hold Steady Take Over the Colbert Report

The Hold Steady was on The Colbert Report last night. Colbert had a few words with lead singer/guitarist Craig Finn and lead guitarist Tad Kubler to start. Best line:
Colbert: "Do you rip off Mother Theresa a lot? Tad, does she get a cut?"

Then the band came out for a performance of "Hurricane J" from the latest record Heaven is Whenever. I kind of dig Finn doing the second chorus alone without all of the "whoaa-oh-oh-oh," which differs from the recorded version...changes it up a bit you know?

Seen Your Video: "The Weekender" by The Hold Steady on Late Night with David Letterman

The Hold Steady's new record comes out this week (oh it's soooo goood), and they're starting the late night show circuit accordingly. They're playing and sitting down to talk with Stephen Colbert on The Colbert Report on 5/13 (Craig Finn chatting with Colbert? Two of my favorite witty Catholics go great together), and played David Letterman this past Friday. "The Weekender" is, by far, one of my favorites on Heaven is Whenever and I cannot wait to see it all live and in person myself (July! Memphis! With The Whigs!)

Stephen Colbert Welcomes Wayne Coyne & The Flaming Lips; Streams "Embryonic" on Colbert Nation Site Until 9/21

The Flaming Lips were on the Colbert Report last night, playing "Convinced of the Hex" off the new record, Embryonic (out 10/13). It sounds like Wayne and the boys got stuck in some 60s time warp with the Moody Blues and Ravi Shankar.

"Embryonic" is available for streaming in its entirety on the Colbert Nation homepage (left nav bar, above the "Upcoming Guest" block) from now until Monday, 9/21. (However, there may be a few problems: I couldn't locate any link so I checked the Flaming Lips' blog about it. There were comments that others saw no link as well, but one poster said he found it but it was missing the last three songs. Possibly a browser issue?)

Lead singer Wayne Coyne also sat down and chatted a bit with Stephen Colbert. Did you know that the Lips's song, "Do You Realize" is now the official state rock song of their home state, Oklahoma? Nice to see Governor Henry sports some top notch musical taste!

In Wilco News...

Just in time for the election, Wilco is appearing on the Colbert Report tonight...should be good.

In other related news, they sent this in a news blurb today. As it would appear they would benefit monetarily from the release, gotta give Tweedy and co. props for this bit of fan consideration.

Also, we have a CONSUMER ALERT. Without consulting us, the DVD company (not WB/Nonesuch) that released "I am trying to break your heart" is about to issue a Blu-Ray Edition which, no surprise, costs considerably more (nearly 2x) than the standard DVD. We're unsure as to the rationale for the release, given that the film was shot in beautiful grainy B&W and has a stereo-only audio track... there is, in our opinion, not much to be gained by spending the extra cash. It's your money... and in this case you should probably hang onto it.

News also mentioned that new material from the band should be out in early '09.

Go see Matt over at You Ain't Picasso for two new songs that Wilco debuted at the recent Bridge Benefit.
